Flowers and Bees

Here's some more work from long time submitter Daniel: "This is two Dog-rose blossoms. Their meaning in the French language of flowers is pleasure and pain. There is a blossom for each of my children, the pleasure and joy of sharing their lives entwined with the pain and loss in the relationship with my estranged wife. Accompanying the blooms are the bees, messengers of the Gods...they were believed to carry news to the Gods of a death, and in this case carrying the news of the death of the relationship. One bee carries a faerie, hopefully a harbinger of joyous news to come. The Bee and Rider is Froudian, the flowers from life,the artist as always, the amazing Lisa Schmoldt, Otherside Ink, now Punta Gordo Florida."  Thanks for sharing Daniel!

Inukshuk

This tattoo was inked by Tim at Dragon FX out of Alberta, Canada.

This tattoo features a fascinating example of the equally fascinating Inukshuk which are stone monuments of many Arctic peoples, particularly the Inuit. Though they dot the landscape all the way from North America to Greenland their exact purpose is unclear and there are several theories. Some say they are landmarks in a terrain that features no natural distinguishing features in a nearly never ending sea of snow and ice. Other theories suggests that they aided in marking boundaries, as places of food storage or even possibly in herding animals. Whatever their historical uses they have become a recognized symbol of Arctic cultures and have grown so popular as to become the logo for the 2010 Olympics which will be held in Vancouver.

We will first turn to Egypt. As the lotus sinks under the water at night and reemerges when the sun returns it was closely associated with the sun. It was also linked with the idea of rebirth and was thus closely tied to Osirian cult as Osiris ruled over death.

The lotus features more heavily in several Asian religions, especially Buddhism and Hinduism. Many deities are depicted as standing upon lotus flowers; Vishnu, Brahma and the goddesses Lakshmi, Sarasvati and Kubera are among the most closely associated with the lotus. Within the realm of Buddhism it is said that everywhere Gautama Buddha stepped a lotus would spring forth.

This tattoo seems particularly fitting for this time of year because, around here, the Surprise Lilies are blooming. Everywhere I go I see beautiful bunches of delicate pink blooms; they are a very welcome sign of summertime.

A Rose for Rosalia

Here's a rose for Rosalia, the Roman festival of roses in honor of the goddess Flora. This tattoo is another from Rate My Ink and was created by Ben at Faith Tattoo in Santa Rosa, CA.

Unfinished Lakshmi

This beautiful, though unfinished, Lakshmi comes from Rate My Ink. You can see a finished Lakshmi back piece, of a different style, here.

Lakshmi is a Hindu goddess of beauty and good luck. She is the mother of the young god of love Kami. Similar to Aphrodite of the Greek myth she arose from the ocean foam. As the wife of Vishnu she is his consort during his earthly incarnations.

The Punisher

Another artist submission by Geri of Pandora's Ink. She did this tattoo on herself folks, yep, her own hand. She's such a badass. She had this to say about it:

Ripped from Rate My Ink. April 28-30 marks the ancient Roman celebration of Floralia in honor of the goddess of youth and flowers, Flora. This was a springtime festival which included sexual license and incorporated symbols of fertility such as beans and seeds.
